What is an Organ Transplant ?

Organ Transplant is a kind of procedure where the failed organ is transplanted in the recipient ‘s body with a healthy one. It can be done only when the recipient’s organ has stopped working or not in good condition due to some injury or any disease.

Bone Marrow Transplant?

A bone marrow transplant is an operation in which dead or damaged marrow is replaced with a healthy one. The bone marrow is defined as the soft, fatty tissue inside of the bone as well as containing stem cells. Stem cells are responsible for the production of red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. It is also called stem cell transplant. A bone marrow transplant can be used for treating diseases such as leukaemia, thalassemia, kidney cancer, lymphoma, and aplastic anaemia.

Types of Transplants:

  • Allogeneic Bone Marrow Transplant: -Transplantation of a donor's stem cells into a recipient's bone marrow are called an allogeneic bone marrow transplant.
  • Autologous Bone Marrow Transplant: -In an autologous bone marrow transplant, a patient's own stem cells are transplanted.
  • Haploidentical Bone Marrow Transplant: -In haploidentical bone marrow transplantation, donors' partially matched stem cells are transplanted.
  • Umbilical Bone Marrow Transplant: -An umbilical bone marrow transplant is a procedure that involves receiving stem cells from a new-born’s umbilical cord right after birth.

Heart Transplant?

It is a procedure where diseased heart is replaced with healthy heart. It is performed in case of severe coronary artery disease where all other medical treatments have failed.

Although it is not a cure for heart disease, it improves the quality of life and prolongs the life of the recipient.

Kidney Transplant?

It is a surgical procedure in which damages kidney is replaced with healthy one. Kidney transplant happens only in kidney failure cases when we have a doner. The doner can be living person or a brain dead(cadaver).
